Somatic tracking is an exposure tool, and exposure is a double-edged sword. If your pain or psychological distress is high (typically a 5 out of 10 or above), your brain is too flooded with danger to have a corrective experience. During severe flare-ups, do not force somatic tracking. Instead, use avoidance behaviors and self-soothing.
Lie down, take a warm bath, use a heating pad, or go for a relaxing walk. Meet yourself where you are at, soothe your nervous system, and save somatic tracking for when the storm has passed
